Project TitleInappropriate medication use in community dwelling elderly people with and without cognitive impairment
ResearchersProfessor Dimity Pond, Dr Parker Magin, Dr Karen Mate, Professor Kichu Nair
DescriptionThis project will examine inappropriate use of medication by both cognitively impaired and cognitively intact people aged 75 or over, building on a study in which cognitive impairment is identified and medications recorded. The project will use a variety of sources to define what medication is inappropriate, including the Beers criteria. The project team will then discuss the medication use with the GPs who are prescribing it. It is anticipated that a variety of reasons for the inappropriate prescribing will be discovered, and that in some cases these prescriptions are not inappropriate, taking into account all the circumstances of the prescription.
